Education in 2020 and 2021

The year 2020 was hit with a dysfunctional button by the covid-19 pandemic and threw everyone off their game. Every sector of industry went through a period of uncertainty where they just couldn’t figure out how to keep functioning with a deadly virus amidst.

The shutdowns, the social distancing, and the masks, all created havoc on the economies of the countries and the entire world suffered. The children included. While the covid was said to impact the elderly more than so others but the government decided to keep it safe with the children and shut down schools and colleges.

While initially, education stood at a standstill, a lot of schools and colleges adapted to different ways that kept the education going. In a period of uncertainty, one thing is sure, that no one wanted to miss out on education. This is why teachers, students, government, and parents all collaborated on different forms of the educational trend to keep the flow of education going.

We were thinking that when we entered the year 2021 we would be free of covid-19, however, this wishful thinking did not come true. And we entered the year 2021 with COVID still very much in place, with a stronger second wave.

So to keep up with the education trend in the year 2021, we have compiled this list of the trend for you to go through

1. Online Classes

Since there was a lockdown in place and then a social distancing order to be maintained, a lot of schools and colleges continued with their education online. By this we mean school, preschool, colleges, even Quran classes in Jeddah and all over the world hopped on to the online platforms.

Classes were held in zoom and google meeting rooms. Teachers prepared their lectures accordingly. Given that the classes and even exams are taking place online, the teachers are most likely to adapt to automatic grading systems as well.

2. Slide Based Learning

A lot of teachers and instructors used the slide to share in their online sessions to give lectures. These slides contained lecture of the day, some of the tools were also used to make this slide sharing interactive and a bit more engaging for the students.

3. Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is compatible with android and apple technology. Not all students, but those who had access to it were able to use this technology to learn as well. Virtual and augmented reality gave students the experience of being in a virtual classroom and helped setting up an environment for students to focus on.

4. Gamification

While online education took care of the courses and all the necessary coursework for students, extracurricular activities were kind of left behind in the year 2020. However, through gamification online games will now be incorporated into the coursework.

In the year 2020, educational sectors were caught a bit off-guard but for the year 2021, we are much better prepared to deal with the situation and still partially incorporate our normal school routine through online platforms.

5. Webinars and Live sessions

A Lot of students availed themselves their time attending live webinar sessions of influencers which helped them stay motivated and focused on their studies. In terms of religious education, Quran classes in Jeddah were aired online on social media platforms and websites for all the students to attend.

While we have listed down the basic trends that will be continuing in the year 2021, preferably in a more refined way, there are still a few other trends that are on a rise.

  • Block-based coding systems is a trend that is for sure to rise in the year 2021. In this system, all the information is present in the form of blocks which is easy for kids to process. With the help of this tech tool, students can interactively create artworks, do their science projects, make animated stories, etc.

  • Blended Learning refers to using flexible approaches for students. Because we might have access to a lot of learning techniques and use digital tools, but not every student will have the same medium to receive an education.
  • Robotics can help students learn STEM concepts. It will help the students fine-tune themselves in the field.

Conclusion

While tech-based learning on an online platform through different digital tools has now become normal, it is yet to excel in terms of adaptability to the circumstances of covid and to the fact that not every student might have access to the same resources as others. Even today, in a household of more than two kids, parents are struggling to attend online classes.

So we still have a far way to go to make online education accessible to everyone in 2021.
