London charity Voyage Youth, set-up to help tackle the root causes of youth crime awarded £15,000 in match-funding from Englefield Charitable Trust via The Good Exchange

Newbury, 27th November 2018 – Not-for-profit cloud matching platform, The Good Exchange, has today announced that Hackney-based charity Voyage Youth, has received a £15,000 match-funding grant from the Englefield Charitable Trust.
Voyage – originally established by the Black Police Association Charitable Trust (BPACT) in 2002 – was set up in response to heightened concerns over increased youth violence and murders, addressing issues concerning racial disproportionality in London boroughs following the Macpherson report recommendations. The organisation’s core mission is to reduce the inequalities and disparities faced by young Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) people in employment, education and community settings.

After winning a free fundraising project on The Good Exchange platform, Voyage listed its unique empowerment programme, Young Leaders for Safer Cities (YLFSC) BTEC accredited course in leadership, aiming to raise more than £80,000. With its preventative focus, involving 100 13-15-year-old boys and girls from disadvantaged wards across North London, the course aims to help young BME people fulfil their potential by encouraging them to stay in mainstream education, and dissuading them from participating in risky behaviours and activities that could be detrimental to their future.

“We’re thrilled to have been awarded this match-funding grant by the Englefield Charitable Trust, which we hope will encourage further match funding from businesses and charitable foundations across the Borough that want to collaboratively help reduce youth crime in London,” said Paul Anderson MBE, Chief Executive at Voyage Youth. “The YLFSC programme is incredibly important to the city, as it helps equip disadvantaged BME youngsters to achieve their leadership potential and create a culture of youth leadership. We believe this will build a strong and powerful voice of young people supported and trained with the ability to challenge whilst creating stronger, resilient and safer communities. We look forward to continuing our work with the Englefield Charitable Trust, The Good Exchange and the wider funding and fundraising community to reach our funding goal.”

Englefield Charitable Trust, which was established in 1968 by Sir William Benyon who took an active interest in its affairs until his death in 2014, supports several different charitable purposes including youth groups. As the Trust’s estate includes residential and commercial property in Hackney, the Voyage Youth project was seen as a good match for a grant.

Catherine Haig, chair of trustees of Englefield Charitable Trust added: “We are delighted to be able to support Voyage Youth in this way. Through the Englefield Charitable Trust’s collaboration with The Good Exchange, we found out about the fantastic work it does with young people in Hackney and it fitted all our criteria for a grant.

“The Good Exchange platform also allows us the option of offering our donation as match funding which we hope will help Voyage Youth generate funds from other donors. We made a similar offer earlier this year to the Rosemary Appeal in West Berkshire, again through The Good Exchange, and were encouraged by how quickly this was matched by other funders and members of the public, effectively doubling our contribution and making a real difference to the charity.”

By offering its grant as match funding which doubles the amounts raised, Englefield Charitable Trust (via The Good Exchange’s matching platform), aims to incentivise new grants, fundraising and donations from businesses, community groups and individuals in London and across the UK through their donations and/or fundraising activities.

Ed Gairdner, COO of the Good Exchange concluded: “It’s sadly well-known that young people from poorer, disadvantaged communities are statistically far more vulnerable to organised criminals who can have a significant detrimental impact on their futures and engagement in education. We’re therefore thrilled to be supporting Voyage Youth, an organisation that is doing excellent work to help tackle this, and hope that the match-funding grant from the Englefield Charitable Trust will encourage further donations to this most worthy cause. We’ve seen time and time again that match-funding acts as a powerful incentive, encouraging further charitable giving and greater collaboration.”

About Englefield Charitable Trust
The Englefield Charitable Trust was established in 1968 by Sir William Benyon. Having inherited the Englefield Estate from a late cousin, Sir William had the idea of setting up a charitable trust very early on. The Trust supports a range of charities and good causes in and around Berkshire, which include education, the arts, social welfare, health, conservation and the armed forces. It is an independent body, with its own board of Trustees. It receives more than 650 requests for help every year and the Trustees must make the difficult decision of selecting which projects to support.

The Trust’s giving has always reflected Sir William’s broad philanthropic outlook. He loved churches and church halls and helped to build and restore them for communities across Berkshire. As a naval man he supported the armed forces at every opportunity. He saw the potential in and understood the importance of youth groups such as the Scouts and Guides, and he loved the land and conservation, history and heritage.

The family has maintained a strong interest in the Trust, which is now chaired by Sir William’s daughter, Catherine Haig.
